A native of California, Maria Moscato was raised in San Diego and studied at the University of California, San Diego, graduating with a B.A. in Studio Visual Arts in 1987. After working as both a store display and theater scenic artist she attended graduate school at San Francisco State University where she graduated with an M.A. in Industrial Arts. Her M.A. included a year of study at the Architecture department, University of Naples, Italy where she also developed her thesis on sustainable models for villages in Southern Italy. She has worked in sculpture, painting and furniture design but today works mostly in watercolor (see Oneiric Animals).

For 2 years she was Fine Arts instructor and department chair at the Academy of Our Lady of Peace high school in San Diego. After meeting her husband she moved to Bologna, Italy where she currently lives with her husband, daughter and cat. In addition to painting, she holds art workshops for young people in her studio and teaches English for Italian students at Johns Hopkins University's Italo-American Association.
